Chapter 11

By the time Darius worked up the nerve to head back to the hotel, River had already checked out. He wasn’t picking up his phone or answering his texts, so Darius had to take drastic measures.

He had to drive down to Ironshore. Show up at River’s door unannounced and grovel like no man had ever groveled before.

He had a panic attack right after getting a blow job…

Maybe he should stop for flowers.

He didn’t even know how to begin to apologize for the previous night. River must have been so confused.

Darius longed for a drink. Not to get wasted, but just a shot of liquid courage to get him through what was destined to be an uncomfortable conversation with River.

He spotted a bar coming up as if the heavens could hear his thoughts and wanted to answer his prayers. Darius pressed harder on the gas. He needed to get to Ironshore asap. The sooner he apologized to River, the sooner the knot in his stomach would go away.

Darius reached what his GPS told him was River’s address, but he found himself in an empty clearing.

So on top of everything else, he was going to have to run around the woods in hopes of finding River. Things sure were shaping up great for him.

He took off in a random direction and hoped for the best. That was all he could do.

He walked in circles for about twenty minutes until he started to hear a hacking sound. He followed it, since it was better than having no idea where to go.

There was a tall man with a heavy frame and pepper hair chopping down a tree. Without looking up, he asked. “You River’s fella?”

Darius smiled, he liked the sound of that. “I’m looking for him. Do you know where he is?”

“Hiding from you, I ‘spose.” The broad-shouldered man started cutting the tree’s trunk into smaller pieces.

“Why do you say that?”

“He knows you’re here. Everyone knows you’re here. Yet he’s letting you wander these woods like a damn fool. So I have to wonder…” The man stopped his work to look Darius in the eye. “What did you do to my son?”

Darius gulped.

“It’s okay Uncle Bert. I got this.”

Darius lit up as he turned around to find River behind him. It’d been less than a day, but he’d already felt like they’d been apart too long.

But River didn’t seem to share his enthusiasm. He walked past Darius and started gathering the pieces of wood his uncle had been chopping. Darius rushed over to help.

With their arms full, River walked off and Darius followed as best he could. He’d never been one for manual labor.

“You haven’t been answering my calls.” Darius didn’t mean to start by sounding accusatory, but River’s coldness was making him too uncomfortable to think straight.

“I didn’t need to, I already knew what you were going to say.”

That was weird, since Darius himself didn’t even know what he was going to say. Maybe River could give him some good material to work with.
